Artists on Bandcamp will have the same autonomy over how they sell their music, and the artist-first revenue model will be maintained.
Bandcamp, an independent music storefront, is being acquired by Epic Games. It will "continue to operate as a standalone marketplace and music community," according to both the firms. The music platform will leverage Epic's resources to grow internationally and build new services.
According to Epic Games' blog, Bandcamp will be critical to the company's aim of developing a creator marketplace ecosystem for content, games, and more. Ethan Diamond, Bandcamp's co-founder and CEO, notes the main deal for artists will not change in the foreseeable future and the existing products and services will still be there.
However, Epic and Bandcamp will collaborate “behind the scenes”, notes Diamond. Both brands will build new merchandising and payment options, mobile apps, live-streaming, and more.
