While malicious web application requests targeted the banking and finance industry the most, DDoS attacks zeroed in most on gaming and retail.

According to Radware, the number of malicious web application requests climbed 88% between 2020 and 2021. Similarly, distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks increased 37% over 2020. Last year, to negotiate with reluctant victims, attacks launched triple extortion campaigns combining cryptolocking, data leaks and DDoS attacks.

Similarly, the volume of micro floods, which denote attacks that often go undetected, rose close to 80% last year, compared to 2020. Europe, the Middle East, Africa and the Americas accounted for 40% of the attack volume each in 2021. The Asia Pacific region accounted for 20%.

Industries most attacked by DDoS events were gaming and retail at 22% each, followed by government (13%) and healthcare (12%). As far as malicious web applications requests are concerned, the most attacked industries were banking and finance, and SaaS providers, together accounting for more than 28% of the attacks.
