An Adobe Digital Economy Index report highlights consumers' shift to online shopping since COVID-19.
US consumers spent $1.7 trillion online between March 2020 to February 2022, an collective increase of $609 billion over 2018 and 2019 combined. Of this $1.7 trillion, consumers ended up paying $32 billion more, due to inflation, as compared to pre-pandemic.
Online grocery saw the biggest shift, with consumers spending $6.7 billion monthly on online grocery orders, compared to $3.1 billion before COVID-19. In 2022, online spending increased 12.2% YoY in January and 15.5% YoY in February.
The rapid growth in online grocery sales also drove curb-side pickup, with the shopping method accounting for 20% of online orders. Grocery sales are predicted to reach $85 billion in 2022, compared to $73.7 billion in 2020. In 2022, US ecommerce is expected to grow at 13%.
