Socialinsider analysed over 75 million Instagram posts between March 2021 and March 2022 to understand the relationship between Instagram hashtags and post views.

The analysis revealed that that number of hashtags an Instagram post has does not have an impact on post distribution. Where posts with one or two hashtags saw an average engagement rate by impressions of 3.21%, using 15 to 16 hashtags in a post resulted in a rate of 3.23%.

Posts with three to four hashtags saw the highest average engagement rate by impressions of 3.41%. Further, it was observed that accounts with 50,000 to 1 million followers saw impression rates dip with an increasing number of hashtags.

Big accounts with such follower counts must use three to four hashtags to reach the best average engagement rate by impressions. Small to mid-sized accounts must focus on five to six hashtags.
