In the latest Economist/YouGov Poll, American workers were asked whether they currently work from home or from another location, as well as where they would prefer to work for their current job. Half of people say they currently work entirely from a location other than home (such as an office or job site), though only 30% say they prefer this arrangement. A larger share — 45% — would prefer to work mostly (16%) or entirely (29%) from home, though only 30% currently do. For each of several working arrangements polled that involve at least some time at home, the share who preferred it exceeded the share in that arrangement.
Methodology: The Economist survey was conducted by YouGov using a nationally representative sample of 1,500 U.S. adult citizens interviewed online between February 5 - 8, 2022. This sample was weighted according to gender, age, race, and education based on the 2018 American Community Survey, conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau, as well as 2016 and 2020 Presidential votes (or non-votes). Respondents were selected from YouGov’s opt-in panel to be representative of all U.S. citizens. The margin of error is approximately 3% for the overall sample.
