Is It Immoral?

Our panelists found activities directly affecting other people - telling lies, cheating on partners or gossiping - most likely to violate their moral principles.

Cheating on partners was seen by most of our panelists as immoral, mentioned by 85% of responders. Also high on the wicked list were telling lies and gossiping about others behind their backs at 64% and 56%.

Not going to church was only seen as immoral by 14%; the same percentage as for gambling, breaking the speed limit and driving gas-guzzling cars.

Although 14% of responers found gambling morally suspect only 9% thought it immoral to play the lottery.

Men and women delivered similar rankings. However, women were more likely to point to cheating on a partner as immoral (87% of women to 83% of men) and men were more concerned about telling lies (66% of men to 63% of women).
