(Week of 9/1/2012) Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney’s Mormon religion was one of the topics of discussion at last week’s GOP Convention, and that was okay with much of the public, who say that candidates discuss their own religious beliefs "about the right amount." But for more than a third of the public in the latest Economist/YouGov Poll, there is too much discussion of religion in politics today.

Romney supporters are much more comfortable than Obama voters are with religion in politics. Seven in ten Romney voters say discussion of religious beliefs is about right. But nearly six in ten Obama voters say there is too much discussion of religion.

The more religious people are, the more comfortable they are with discussion of religion in politics. In fact, one in four Americans who say religion is very important to them personally would like to see more discussion of a candidate’s religious beliefs.
