(Week of 7/29/2013) Summer blockbusters are now in the movie theaters, but many Americans say they won’t be going to theaters to see them. Instead, according to this week’s Economist/YouGov Poll, more will wait to see them at home – or not bother to see them at all.
More than three in four adults says they go to see movies in theaters a few times a year or even less. In fact, a majority prefers seeing movies at home as opposed to seeing them in a theater.
Younger adults go to movie theaters more often, but most of them also say they seldom go. While they are more likely than the oldest adults to prefer watching movies in theaters, more still say they want to watch them at home.
As far as this year’s crop of summer movies goes, a third or more admit not being interested in each. Half claim no interest in Fast and Furious 6; nearly a third have no interest at all in even the most popular of the summer films, Star Trek: Into Darkness. Many aren’t sure that the summertime is the best time to go to theaters: just 25% agree the best movies are released in the summertime.
What Americans are more likely to agree on is what to eat when they see a movie – whatever their preferred venue. Nearly half say popcorn is their favorite film food.
Less than one in five say they don’t eat anything when they are watching.
Two in three want their popcorn buttered. Just one in ten won’t eat popcorn.
