Back to the Future Day: Only the young want to skip ahead in time

Men are far more determined to travel through time than women are, and only those under 30 want to travel to the future

Today, October 21st 2015, is 'Back to the Future Day', the day that Marty McFly time travelled to in the 1989 movie Back to the Future II. Movie makers in 1989 had imagined that 2015 would be a world of self-tying shoes, flying cars and hoverboards, but even though our travel and footwear have not changed that much the realm of ubiquitous internet and smartphones may have surprised them.

YouGov's latest research shows that most Americans are eager to travel through time. 62% of Americans would time travel if they had the chance, while only 28% say that they wouldn't. Men are far more gung-ho about time travel than women are, however. 47% of men say that they definitely would time travel compared to only 25% of women.

Not that many are expecting that they will ever have the chance. Just under half the country (48%) say that time travel is impossible, even theoretically.

The question of whether to travel forwards or backwards in time exposes a clear divide between the youngest Americans and everyone else. 50% of under-30s say that they would travel to the future if they had the chance, but in every other age group most people say that they would rather travel to the past. Only 20% of over-65s say that they would like to go forwards in time.
