In the wake of the worst day for U.S. military deaths in Afghanistan, Americans express dissatisfaction with the President’s management of the war there, and in the latest Economist/YouGov Poll, Americans divided on whether U.S. involvement there was a mistake -a change from just a few months ago.

However, the situation in Afghanistan is much more likely than what is happening in Iraq to be seen as something THIS President bears responsibility for. 63% say he has at least some of the responsibility for the situation in Afghanistan today; 27% say most of the responsibility is his. And he is not handling it well. 50% say he has no clear plan.

Only 34% approve of the President’s handling of the overall situation there.

And looking ahead, Americans doubt there will be a happy ending -even in the long run. 56% believe that Afghanistan will never become a stable democracy, even more than feel that way about the prospects for future democracy in Iraq.
