Among policies asked about, Conservatives and Liberals differ most on funding CBC / Radio-Canada
Past YouGov polling has found that half of Canadians cite U.S.-Canada relations as a top issue in Canada and over one-third cite each of housing, inflation, and healthcare. How are Liberal Party Prime Minister Mark Carney and Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre proposing to address these issues?
To understand which policies Canadians are most likely to support, YouGov has conducted a new survey drawing from candidate speeches, party websites, and online posts. See more information on the policies included.
The majority of policies proposed by the top two parties' leaders are widely supported by Canadians: At least 60% of Canadians support each of 14 of the 20 policies asked about. Among the policies asked about, Canadians are most likely to support providing funding for apprenticeships (83% support), a measure that has been proposed by both candidates. Large majorities of Canadians also support expanding dental care coverage (79%), reducing income taxes (77%), and creating an entity for affordable housing (77%).
Among Carney’s policies included in the survey, those with the least support are increasing annual funding to CBC / Radio-Canada by $150 million (36%) and buying back guns (44%). Poilievre’s least popular policies asked about are banning supervised consumption sites (40%) and defunding the CBC / Radio-Canada (41%).
Among the three major national parties, support for providing funding for apprenticeships is similar: More than 80% of each group say they support it. The shares of Liberals and Conservatives supporting policies are also similar on maintaining current caps on immigration, spending on defense, tying federal funding for cities to the number of housing starts, and removing the sales tax for new homes under $1.3 million. The percentage who support each of those policies among Liberals and Conservatives is within 10 percentage points.
Liberals and Conservatives differ most on defunding CBC/ Radio-Canada: about two-thirds (68%) of Conservatives support defunding it, compared to only 27% of Liberals. Support for capping pollution from the oil and gas sector also differs significantly by party: 81% of Liberals and New Democrats support it, compared to about half (49%) of Conservatives.
While Liberals and New Democrats are aligned on capping pollution from the oil and gas sector, they differ on several other policies. Liberals are more likely than New Democrats to support building new oil / natural gas pipelines (71% vs. 45%). More Liberals than New Democrats also support cutting federal spending in conjunction with new administrative costs (54% vs. 30%) and reducing income taxes (78% vs. 56%).
