Support for military aid to Ukraine is waning again

Many Americans believe neither Russia nor Ukraine is winning the war between them. Views on U.S. military aid to Ukraine are divided, though a growing share of Americans support reducing or stopping aid entirely. More disapprove than approve of Trump's handling of the conflict.

What you need to know about Americans' views of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, as of the December 26-29, 2025 Economist / YouGov Poll:

  • In the war between Russia and Ukraine, more Americans believe Russia is currently winning than say Ukraine is (27% vs. 6%); even more — 44% — say neither side is currently ahead
  • Support for increasing military aid to Ukraine has fallen since October: 29% of Americans now say they want aid to be increased, while 30% want aid to be stopped or decreased and 20% want it to stay the same
    • In mid-October, 35% wanted to increase aid and 21% wanted to stop or cut it
  • Growing shares of Democrats and Republicans are in favor of decreasing or stopping military aid to Ukraine
    • Nearly half of Republicans want Ukraine aid to be reduced or stopped, as do 14% of Democrats — the highest share since October 2024
  • More Americans strongly or somewhat disapprove than approve of Trump's handling of the situation with Russia and Ukraine (49% vs. 30%)
