The former Secretary of State has thrown her support behind marriage equality in a video posted by the Human Rights Campaign earlier today.
While Clinton has not previously spoken out in favor of marriage equality, she has been known for her advocacy for LGBT rights. As Secretary of State, she attracted attention and praise for a speech before the U.N. declaring that 'gay rights are human rights'.
Still, commentators are beginning to view the announcement in the context of the 2016 presidential race. For example, the Huffington Post began its article on the video by saying "Former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton announced her support for gay marriage Monday, putting her in line with other potential Democratic presidential candidates on a social issue that is rapidly gaining public approval (...)"
