(Week of 8/18/2012) What sort of movie do Americans favor? According to the latest Economist/YouGov Poll, nearly one in three would pick a comedy — and both Democrats and Republicans agree. Overall, dramas run far behind, with action movies in second place.

And the movie should be American-made. Americans are more than fifteen times as likely to favor movies made in Hollywood over those made in other countries. 64% prefer U.S. movies, while just 4% prefer foreign films.

Men would choose action over comedy, and by a wide margin (36% to 22%), when it comes to picking a movie to see. 40% of women would choose to watch a comedy over any of the other types of films (just 17% of women would pick an action movie).

However, Americans would rather watch TV than go out to a movie. In fact, more would rather read a book than go to a movie. 34% say they most like to watch television, 19% like reading, and 13% like attending movies.
