(Week of 8/25/2012) The recent shootings near the Empire State Building in New York City have changed little when it comes to opinions about gun control: less than half the public would like stricter gun laws, about the same as opinion in July, after the shootings at the Aurora, Colorado movie theater.
As before, Democrats favor stricter gun laws (71% in this week’s poll), while Republicans do not (75% would keep them as they are or make them even less strict).
However, opinion on one of many possible gun limits may have shifted since July. This week, Americans are closely divided when it comes to preventing people from carrying a concealed gun in public. In July, they were opposed, 48% to 35%.
