In the run up to the PRSA 2013 International conference, we asked a nationally representative sample of over 1,000 American adults some questions about the host city - Philadelphia.
Asked what words they feel sum up the city, 63% say historic. And as the home of the Liberty Bell, we certainly agree!
Talking of the liberty bell – over three quarters (78%) of American adults are aware that Philadelphia plays host to the iconic symbol. Those who are older or educated to a higher level are more likely to know this, as are men when compared with women.
Arguably the second most iconic symbol of the city – the Philly Cheesesteak – was the subject of our next question. Awareness of this legend is almost universal across the nation with 96% of Americans having heard of it and two-thirds (68%) of the population having had the pleasure of sampling one.
Unsurprisingly there are strong regional variations here, with those closest to the Birth Place of America more likely to have tried one.
The last icons we investigated in reference to the City of Brotherly Love is the numerous films set in and around the city. As well as Philadelphia itself, the list includes classics such as Rocky, 12 Monkeys and Silver Linings Playbook.
Asked which were their two favourites, Rocky punched its way to the top of the leader board, cheered on by one in three (33%) Americans. The Sixth Sense creeped into second placed with one in four (25%) selecting it.
Differences between men and women are interesting here with a much larger proportion of men voting for Rocky (42% compared with 23% of women). Women, however, are more likely to prefer The Sixth Sense (30% compared with 20% of men).
Note on Method
Total sample size was 1107 adults. Fieldwork was undertaken between 16th - 18th October 2013. The survey was carried out online. The figures have been weighted and are representative of all US adults (aged 18+).
