A recent glitch in American Airline's scheduling system allowed too many pilots to take vacation time over the holiday period, leaving many holiday flights without their captain. In an effort to ensure that travelers reach their destinations, the airline has offered to pay pilots 150% of their hourly rate to work the dates affected by the system error.
YouGov asked American respondents what they would do if they were a pilot in this situation. Overall, 43% of respondents said they’d work for time and a half pay, while 17% said they’d take the vacation they booked. Another 14% said they’d work the time, but only for more than 1.5x their normal pay. A small percentage (7%) said they’d work for their regular pay.
Within those answers, there was an age split. Just 24% of 18-24 year olds said they’d work the time for extra pay while this portion increased to 34% of 25-34 year olds, 41% of 35-44 year olds and continued to increase to 51% of 55+ respondents.
