(Week of 3/9/2013) America takes its religion seriously. In the latest Economist/YouGov Poll, most Americans describe religion as something that is important in their lives – and two in five say it is very important.
But not everyone feels this way. Those under the age of 30 are as likely to say religion is not important at all as to say it is very important. Those 65 and older are more than five times as likely to say religion is very important than to think it is not important at all.
Men are less likely than women to assign importance to religion. Republicans are more likely than Democrats or independents to say religion is very important in their lives. In fact, 52% of Republicans say this. The Northeast and West are less religious than the Midwest and the South.
