Over half of Republicans would support a plan to arm teachers using federal funds

The US Department of Education is reportedly considering allowing states to use federal funding to purchase guns for educators. Six in ten (59%) Americans say they would disagree with such a plan, while one-quarter (25%) would agree, according to new data from YouGov Omnibus.

Over half (55%) of Republicans would agree with a plan to arm teachers using federal funds. Only 10% of Democrats and 22% of politically independent people feel the same. An overwhelming majority (80%) of Democrats would disagree with this plan, as would 28% of Republicans.

Close to one-third (31%) of men say they would agree with this idea, while over half (56%) disagree. Only one in five (20%) women say they would agree, while 62% are opposed. Another 13% of men and 18% of women say they are not sure about this idea.

Federal funding could be potentially allocated towards firearms and firearm training under the Every Student Succeeds Act, which became law in 2015 and does not expressly prohibit weapons purchases.
