Only one-quarter of Americans have ever had a political argument at their holiday celebrations, and younger adults are far more likely than older ones to celebrate New Year's.
What you need to know about Americans' views of the holidays, as of the December 20 - 22, 2025 Economist / YouGov Poll:
- Only 24% of Americans say there has ever been an argument about politics at a holiday celebration they've attended; 73% say there hasn't been and 3% would prefer not to say
- Democrats are slightly more likely than Republicans to have had a politics argument at a holiday celebration (28% vs. 22%)
- Adults under 30 are twice as likely as Americans 65 and older to say their holiday celebrations have featured a political argument (34% vs. 16%)
- 44% of Americans plan to celebrate New Year's this year, including 65% of adults under 45 and only 27% of older Americans
- Among adults under 45, those with children under 18 are more likely than those without young children to be planning to celebrate New Year's (72% vs. 62%)
