After two weeks of rising job approval, Donald Trump's net job approval fell this week and is near the lowest approval numbers he has ever received across his two terms.

What you need to know about Americans' views of Trump, as of the December 20 - 22, 2025 Economist / YouGov Poll:

  • 39% of Americans strongly or somewhat approve of Trump's job performance, while 57% disapprove — a net approval of -19, after rounding
    • Trump's net approval is down from the past two weeks of Economist / YouGov Polls, when he registered net approval of -13 and -14
    • But it's in line with the two polls before that, in late November, when Trump's net approval was -19 and -19
  • At this point in Trump's first term, Trump's net job approval was -14
  • For most of Trump's second term so far, he has received stronger approval from Republicans than he did early in his first term
    • While Trump's net approval among Republicans of +71 is higher than the +65 he received at this point in his first term, his net approval among Republicans has been trending down and is now close to first-term levels
  • Americans have a higher net approval of how Trump is handling immigration (-6) than they do of Trump's overall job performance (-19), and net approval of his handling of inflation and prices (-28 when most recently asked in the prior week's poll) has consistently been lower than his overall job approval
  • Net approval of Trump's handling of the economy (-17) has closely tracked Trump's overall net job approval throughout his term so far
  • Two-thirds of Americans (66%) either strongly disapprove (52%) or somewhat disapprove (14%) of renaming the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., to the Trump-Kennedy Center, while 18% either strongly approve (9%) or somewhat approve (10%)
    • A majority (56%) of self-identified MAGA Republicans — Republicans who say they are MAGA supporters — either strongly approve (31%) or somewhat approve (25%) of the renaming
    • The renaming is opposed by majorities of Democrats (95% disapprove), Independents (68%), and non-MAGA Republicans (59%)
