Mapped: Lottery ticket purchasing in the US

Adults in mid-Atlantic are the most likely of any region in the United States to have purchased a lottery ticket in the last year, according to YouGov Profiles data.

Three in ten Americans in the area – which encompasses New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Washington, D.C. and the Virginias – have purchased a lottery ticket either online or in-person in the last 12 months (30%).

Those in the Mountain region are the least likely to have tried their hand at the lottery in the last year, with 19% reporting such a purchase. The region includes Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming.

YouGov Profiles data also reveals the designated market areas (DMA) with the highest lotto uptake. Roughly two in five adults in the Harrisburg – Lancaster – Lebanon – York market in Pennsylvania bought a lotto ticket in the past year (41%).

That’s well ahead of the Greenville – Spartanburg – Asheville – Anderson DMA in South Carolina (34%), Tampa – Saint Petersburg in Florida (32%), New York (30%), and Cleveland (30%).
