Most still have not been victims of identity theft

In the wake of a seismic data breach from Equifax that could affect as many as 143 million consumers, Americans are talking about online security and identity theft.

According to YouGov Omnibus research, most Americans say they haven’t been the victim of identity theft or had their passwords stolen. While 22% said they use unique passwords for all their online accounts, many are more relaxed with their security. When it comes to account security and identity theft, 22% said they have had their accounts hacked once, and another 14% said they’ve had their identity stolen.

Despite a majority saying they have been safe from hacking and identity theft, most Americans agree that they’re still only somewhat safe from hackers. Just 8% of Americans consider themselves very safe from hackers.

While the most popular way to remember new passwords among Americans was writing it down (22%), 34% said they have shared passwords with a significant other.
