Despite upward trends in COVID-19 cases throughout most states, about one in five Canadians is interested in travelling to the United States.

According to a recent survey of more than a 1,000 Canadians, 17 percent of Canadians said they remain interested in going to the United States, especially those aged 18 to 24 (35%). Another two percent said they weren’t interested in going to the US before the pandemic, but now are.

Nearly three in 10 (29%) said they were interested in crossing the border into the United States to travel before the COVID-19 pandemic struck but have since lost interest.

Just under half (45%) of Canadians had no desire to travel south before the pandemic and remain in the same mindset. Those aged 55 and over (56%) are more likely to be in this group.

As of right now however, it remains moot for most people as the border between the two countries remains closed to all but essential travel until at least July 21.

While the US struggles to flatten the curve and keep the virus at bay, the number of confirmed cases – and deaths as a result – has levelled off in Canada.

Meanwhile, the most recent data from YouGov’s COVID-19 monitor shows fear of contracting the virus among Canadians has dropped since peaking in April. At last check on July 7, nearly half (54%) of Canadians were at least somewhat scared of contracting the virus.

Fear among Americans hasn’t seen as sharp of a decline and as of July 6, 58 percent of Americans were at least somewhat scared of contracting COVID-19.

Methodology: Total sample size was 1,031 adults. Fieldwork was undertaken between June 18 – 26. 2020 The survey was carried out online. The figures have been weighted and are representative of all Canadian adults (aged 18+). View results
