Getting ready for trick-or-treaters next month?
Here’s a tip: If you want to give away the most popular candy among America’s youth, hand out Reese’s Peanut Butter cups.
Nearly one in five children (18%) consider the chocolate and peanut butter confection a favorite. That’s more than twice the love shown to any other candy on the market, according to YouGov’s Youth Omnibus survey, which measures the attitudes of young people aged 8 to 17. YouGov gained permission from the parents of more than 1,000 survey respondents before asking their children a range of questions about things like video games, social media use, movies and yes, candy.
We asked kids to tell us their one and only favorite candy, and, -- save for 8-year-old children -- every other age chose Reese’s Peanut Butter cups as the best, according to our data.
After Reese’s, it’s Kit Kat. The Nestle confection of wafers and chocolate drew 8 percent of the favorite votes, and Snickers, M&M’s and Sour Patch Kids all grabbed 7 percent overall. But the performance for these candies is spotty across the age ranges. For instance, 12 percent of 17 year olds say Kit Kat is their favorite, but that’s only true for 5 percent of 11 year olds.
Some Halloween mainstays, like candy corn and Tootsie Rolls, draw low marks. In fact, not one 11, 12, 13 or 14 year old considers Tootsie Rolls as their favorite.
So the message is clear: if you’re planning on giving out candy for Halloween this year and want to be the popular house on the block, choose your candy wisely.
