Most Americans, including most Democrats, agree that somebody needs to 'make America great again'

Donald Trump has unexpectedly risen to lead the Republican field and he has done so as he promises to do one simple thing: make America great again. The slogan is plastered all over his campaign materials and is arguably more catchy or easy to remember than those of his rivals, for example Hillary Clinton's 'Hillary for America' or Ted Cruz's 'Reigniting the Promise of America'.

YouGov's latest research shows that a large majority of Americans (69%) think that somebody needs to 'make America great again'. Unsurprisingly, agreement for Donald Trump's slogan is highest among Republicans (92%) but even most Democrats (54%) agree with the sentiment, even if 82% of them have a very unfavorable opinion of Trump himself.

Although many political analysts agree that Trump's success is a function of his support among working class Americans, who are more worried about their economic situation than others, when it comes to the desire for someone to 'make America great again' working class Americans (66%) are slightly less likely than middle class Americans (71%) to agree with it.

Agreement with wanting someone to 'make America great again' is, however, noticeably higher among people who say that they are struggling to remain in their current class (84%) than it is among people who say they are either comfortable (68%) or rising (72%).
