Mitt Romney’s victories in Iowa and New Hampshire make him the likely Republican nominee for President but he’s still got a lot of work to do, according to the last Economist/You Gov poll conducted before the New Hampshire primary (week of January 7, 2012).
In an Obama-Romney contest, 41% think Obama would win, 24% Romney, with 18% saying they are currently equally likely to win and 17% not sure.
Among other reasons, adults nationwide may sense Obama has an advantage because more perceive Obama as steadfast and empathetic. Half (52%) believe Obama takes positions and sticks by them, only 40% perceive Romney that way. Similarly, 51% say Obama cares about “people like me,” only 42% feel that way about Romney.
