Is there a class divide? Ask the American public, and they say there is. In this week’s Economist/YouGov Poll (Week of 1/28/2012), 74% agree that “There is a growing divided in the United States between elites and ordinary people.”

More than eight in ten Democrats agree; but so do seven in ten Republicans.

Although only 13% of the country considers themselves part of the Occupy Wall Street movement, like OWS, most see big differences between elites and ordinary Americans on issues. And the biggest gaps are on economic issues: 72% see a big gap in taxing and spending questions; 65% see a big gap on social welfare questions. In contrast less than half see big differences on issues like morality, foreign policy and immigration.
