Support for the death penalty may be cracking in the US, with only 54% expressing support in the Economist/YouGov poll (Week of 3/17/2012) and 23% opposed, with 23% not sure.
Looking ahead, sharp differences in opinion by age suggest the next generation may be willing to reconsider the death penalty. Among the youngest, age 18-29, only 40% support, 30% oppose, 29% not sure. Among the oldest, 62% support, 25% oppose, 13% not sure.
