Congress Job Approval 8%, with Solid Majorities of Key Groups Strongly Disapproving

Congress has few friends and admirers. It would be hard to imagine any time in history when the aphorism of Mark Twain’s Pudd’nhead Wilson rang quite so true: “It could probably be shown by facts and figures that there is no distinctly native American criminal class except Congress.” Only 8% approve the job Congress is doing, even somewhat, in the Economist/YouGov poll (Week of 3/31/2012).

More striking on the other side of the ledger is the roll of subgroups where the poll finds majorities stating they disapprove strongly of the performance of this Congress:

  • Incomes of $100,000 or more: 55%
  • Age 65 and older: 53%
  • Independents: 52%
  • College graduates: 51%
  • Liberals: 51%
