Romney's Next Assignment: Get People Ready To Believe He Can Win

April 20, 2012, 2:00 PM GMT+0

(Week of 4/14/2012) Mitt Romney has accomplished a lot (at great expense) this year, all but wrapping up the Republican nomination months before the Republican convention in Tampa this summer. What he has not yet been able to do is to convince as many as 2-in-5 Americans to believe he can defeat incumbent President Barack Obama in the fall.

Overall, 57% believe Obama will win, 38% Romney. It’s even worse among Independent voters: 59%-36%. In partisan terms, 20% of Republicans believe Obama will beat Romney, only 8% of Democrats think Romney will beat Obama. Romney’s one bright spot, as it is in most crosstabulations of political polls these day, is among those age 65 or older, where 49% think Obama will win, 47% Romney.
