On Monday, President Joe Biden will meet with Senator Joe Manchin, a Democrat from West Virginia, who is expected to be an integral vote for the party to pass an infrastructure bill. Manchin has been the Democratic Senator most in need of convincing by Biden and other Democrats when it comes to spending bills, including the COVID relief bill.
Although nearly four in ten Americans (39%) have yet to form an opinion of Manchin, Republicans like him much more than Democrats do. According to the latest Economist/YouGov poll, more than one-third (37%) of Republicans view Manchin favorably, with 27% viewing him unfavorably.
As for Democrats, unfavorable ratings outnumber favorable ones. Three in 10 Democrats (29%) of Democrats have a favorable opinion of Manchin; 39% have an unfavorable opinion of him.
One-quarter (27%) of Independents have a favorable view of the Senator, while 31% have an unfavorable opinion of him.
Methodology: The Economist survey was conducted by YouGov using a nationally representative sample of 1,500 US Adult Citizens interviewed online between May 1 - 4, 2021. This sample was weighted according to gender, age, race, and education based on the American Community Survey, conducted by the US Bureau of the Census, as well as 2016 Presidential vote, registration status, geographic region, and news interest. Respondents were selected from YouGov’s opt-in panel to be representative of all US citizens. The margin of error is approximately 2.6% for the overall sample
