Democrats have their largest advantage so far this year in the race for control of Congress. 46% of registered voters say they would vote for the Democratic candidate if elections for U.S. Congress were held today, compared to 39% who would vote for the Republican candidate.
What you need to know about the race for Congress as of the November 7 - 10, 2025 Economist / YouGov Poll:
- Democrats have a 6-point lead (accounting for rounding) — the biggest lead Democrats have had on this question since Economist / YouGov polls resumed asking it earlier this year
- This is also a larger Democratic advantage than at this point before the 2024 election (a 1-point Democratic advantage) and the 2022 midterms (4 points)
- Advantages for either party on this question about congressional voting intention have been volatile, with significant changes from week to week
The 46% of registered voters who say they'll vote for the Democratic candidate is the largest share of voters to say this since YouGov first asked this question in February
- The share of those registered voters who voted for Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election who say they'll vote for the Democratic candidate is higher than the share of 2024 Trump voters who say they'll vote for the Republican candidate (87% vs. 80%)
- Democrats also lead Republicans among registered voters who didn't vote for president in 2024 (43% vs. 20%)
- More voters expect the Democrats to win a U.S. House majority in the 2026 elections than expect Republicans to (41% vs. 28%)
- Supporters of Democratic House candidates overwhelmingly expect their side to win: 80% expect a Democratic majority and 5% a Republican majority, with 15% not sure
- Most supporters of Republican House candidates also expect Republicans to win a majority — but by smaller margins. 68% of those who prefer Republican candidates expect a GOP majority, compared to 8% who expect a Democratic majority and 24% who are not sure
