Americans are more sympathetic to Democratic lawmakers than to Trump in their dispute about illegal orders

More Americans side with Democratic lawmakers who told U.S. soldiers to refuse unlawful orders than side with Trump calling those Democrats seditious, according to the November 28 - December 1, 2025 Economist / YouGov Poll.

  • 46% of Americans strongly approve (34%) or somewhat approve (13%) of the Democrats' message, while 39% strongly disapprove (30%) or somewhat disapprove (9%), a net approval of +8
  • 26% of Americans strongly approve (15%) or somewhat approve (12%) of Trump's response, while 59% strongly disapprove (47%) or somewhat disapprove (12%), a net approval of -33
  • Democrats feel much more strongly about the two messages than do Republicans
    • 61% of Democrats strongly approve of the Democratic lawmakers' message, compared to 34% of Republicans strongly approving of Trump's message
    • 84% of Democrats strongly disapprove of Trump's message, compared to 55% of Republicans who strongly disapprove of the Democratic message
