Approval of Donald Trump's job performance has fallen in the past week among Republicans and women, and risen among Hispanics and men, though it's too early to say whether these changes are significant or reflect normal week-to-week variation.
What you need to know about Americans' approval of Trump, as of the January 2 - 5, 2026 Economist / YouGov Poll:
- Among Republicans, Trump's net job approval — the percentage who strongly or somewhat approve of the way he is handling his job as percentage, minus the percentage who disapprove — is +65, the lowest in his second term
Last week it was +78
- Among women, Trump's net approval fell this week to -31 from -26 last week
- Among men, it rose to -2 from -6
- Among Hispanic Americans, Trump's net approval is -22
- A week ago, it was -37
- All week-to-week changes should be interpreted cautiously
- Changes in Trump's job approval historically have been volatile
- Net approvals make changes in approval look bigger, because an increase in approval generally is accompanied by a corresponding decrease in disapproval
- Subgroups of Americans are represented by subsets of the total number of respondents and are more likely to have big changes from week to week
- While the Venezuela strike may have affected some Americans' opinions of Trump's job handling, Americans' are most likely to prioritize an economic issue
- 30% of Americans say inflation/prices is the most important issue for them, the highest since the option was added to the near-weekly question in July 2022
- 4% of Americans say national security is their most important issue, compared to 5% two weeks ago, when the question was last asked
- 1% say their most important issue is foreign policy, unchanged from two weeks ago
