Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid announced yesterday that an assault weapon ban was being dropped from gun control measures currently before the Senate.
As CBS News explains, "lawmakers have been working on a number of proposals to reduce gun violence, covering everything from combating illegal gun trafficking and enhancing school safety to strengthening background checks and improving the mental health system (...)"
The Diane Feinstein-authored assault weapon ban has been among the proposals with the least support. Currently only 40 Senators say they'd vote for the bill. The proposal passed Senate Judiciary with only support from Democrats and prompted a heated exchange between Feinstein and Texas Senator Ted Cruz which made national headlines.
Because of the strong chance of a Republican filibuster, it is expected that the proposed gun control bill will need at least 60 votes.
