(Week of 6/8/2013) If immigration reform is to pass Congress this year, it will need support from Republican Senators and Representatives. But rank and file Republicans in the latest Economist/YouGov Poll, are closely divided on how to handle immigration – and tend to be negative on legal changes.
Although 56% overall would favor a pathway to citizenship if the illegal immigrant paid a fine, passed a background check and held a job, just 39% of Republicans would. More oppose that change.
However, Republicans are just about as supportive of creating a guest worker program as are other Americans. And they are even more in favor of increasing border security by building border fences. 56% of the public favors this – along with 78% of Republicans.
