(Week of 7/28/2012) The first days of the Summer Olympics brought some of the public’s favorite events, as Americans in the latest Economist/YouGov Poll list swimming and gymnastics among their top four Olympics activities. And women led the way.
Two-thirds of Americans who are watching the games (and most Americans claim they are watching) cite those two events among their top four. And women viewers are even more likely to mention them.
Both sexes rate track and field high, but there the similarities end. For men, basketball, soccer and boxing score well. For women, tennis is nearly as popular as basketball.
Although most Americans (70%) say they are watching the Olympics, the majority are not watching every day. Just 14% say they will be watching a lot of events on a daily basis. Men and women are equally likely to be fans of the Olympic Games.
