More than half of the country (53%) has plans for this upcoming Sunday: watching the New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks play in Super Bowl XLIX.
Of those planning to watch the big event, many will be watching in their own homes (79%), though Baby Boomers are more likely to watch the game alone than Millennials (45% vs. 22%). 46% of Millennials will be watching the game with others, and nearly a quarter (24%) will watch at a friend’s house.
Only 16% of Americans who will watch the Super Bowl are doing so because they support one of the teams. 58% of those planning to tune in say they will watch the game because they like watching football in general, and half of them simply enjoy the event.
Commercial Crazy
Every year during Super Bowl season the commercials shown during the game are highly anticipated, and this year is no different. Of those planning to watch this year’s Super Bowl, 50% said the commercials are a reason why, and 47% said they like the commercials a lot.
Americans also know what they want in a Super Bowl commercial. The vast majority like Super Bowl commercials to be funny, and a third enjoy commercials with some action. Millennial viewers, more than any other age group, also like commercials with a linking theme (39% compared to 26% of both 35-54 year olds and over 55s).
Super Bowl of Chips
Americans are already thinking about what they’re going to eat and drink during the game. More than a third (36%) of Americans who will watch the Super Bowl expect to munch on chips, though there is a slight divide between coasts. 40% of those from the West expect to have chips, compared to 32% of those in the Northeast. Chicken wings will be in high demand in the Northeast (38%), but only 20% of viewers from the West will indulge.
What do you expect to eat while you watch the Super Bowl?
Super Bowl viewers understand the importance of staying hydrated. 46% of women expect to have water during the game, along with 30% of men. Many are expecting to indulge in a little alcohol. 31% of men and 25% of women expect to have beer, and 7% of men and 12% of women expect to have wine. While the East and West might not have the same plans for food, their ideas about drinks are pretty much the same. Beer is expected to be drunk by 26% of viewers in the Northeast and an equal 26% of those from the West. 12% of viewers in the Northeast and 13% of those on the West Coast plan to drink wine.
