As the holiday season approaches, many people are faced with the decision of whether to buy a real or artificial Christmas tree.
For some Americans — according to a new YouGov poll — there is no substitute for a real Christmas tree. About two in five (39%) U.S. adults say they prefer to get a fresh tree. Slightly more adults (45%) prefer the experience of a reusable, artificial tree, which is also perceived as better for the environment and more affordable by more Americans than say either thing about real trees. Artificial trees particularly win out on perceived affordability (60%, vs. 21% who say real trees are more affordable.)
Women (52%) are more likely than men (38%) to want an artificial Christmas tree. Younger men are more inclined to want a real Christmas tree, with men switching their preference to a reusable tree around age 50. Men in their 30s are the most enthusiastic age-gender group when it comes to getting a real Christmas tree.

Methodology: This Daily Questions survey was conducted by YouGov using a nationally representative sample of 6,647 U.S. adults interviewed online on December 15 - 16, 2022. The samples were weighted to be representative of the U.S. population, based on gender, age, race, education, U.S. census region, and political party.
