With the last national election only four months behind us, Kentucky's 2014 senate race is already heating up.
It is speculated that actress Ashley Judd might run as the Democratic challenger to Mitch McConnell, who has been in office since 1985 and Republican minority leader of the Senate since 2007.
While Judd was raised and educated in Kentucky, she does not currently live in the state and faces a difficult path in a state that overwhelmingly voted for Mitt Romney.
Still Republicans are taking her candidacy seriously enough to begin attacking her, as Karl Rove did with an ad in early February from his American Crossroads PAC.
Judd has received blowback too from the Democratic party in Kentucky who have expressed concerns that she doesn't fit the state and her candidacy might be used as ammunition and jeopardize other in-state races.
Incumbent Mitch McConnell has not been sitting still, however, as attention gets focused on a potential challenger. McConnell has just released an ad, featuring his wife, former Labor Secretary Elaine Chao, speaking out on his behalf and addressing arguably racist remarks tweeted by a Kentucky Democratic group.
