Two senators, Joe Manchin (D-WV) and Pat Toomey (R-PA), announced today a bipartisan compromise on background checks for gun purchases.
As NBC reports, "The two have been working on a compromise proposal that could draw Republican support for expanding background checks." While "[t]he compromise doesn't go as far as the universal background checks that President Barack Obama first envisioned in the wake of the Newtown shootings...The deal between Toomey and Manchin represents a major breakthrough for a package of new gun laws that Obama proposed (...)"
The new proposal will end exceptions to background checks for in-person and internet sales, but will not limit cover noncommercial person-to-person sales.
