On the 8th November typhoon Haiyan struck central Philippines, killing more than 5,000 people. The international community have rallied together to provide as much relief as possible, with the US government providing $37million in aid.

Two weeks later – between the 22nd and 25th of July, one in eight (12%) of the population were unaware of this event. Young people are the most likely to be unaware at 21% compared with just 5% of those aged 55 or over.

Of those who were aware of the disaster, 13% have donated money themselves to help with the aid effort. This was highest among those with post graduate qualifications – one in five (20%) of whom have donated money. This compares with one in ten (10%) of those with high school or fewer qualifications.

A further 50 per cent of those aware of the disaster would consider donating money.

The American Red Cross have been the overwhelming charity of choice for those donating to the Philippine relief effort, with almost half (47%) having donated to them. The next nearest charity was the Salvation Army (18%). Large proportions have given money through their church or religious institution.
