Only 19% of Americans think most people they know would vote for an openly gay man as president, according to a new YouGov poll.
When asked “Do you think most people you know would be willing to vote for a gay man for president?”, 19% said yes, 49% said no and 31% were not sure.
Americans answered in very similar percentages when asked the same question about a lesbian woman.
There was a slight gender gap and a more pronounced partisan one in the results.
17% of men and 22% of women said most people they know would vote for a gay president, while 24% of Democrats and 13% of Republicans said the same thing.
On the other hand, 56% of men and 43% of women did not think most people they know would vote for a gay president. 41% of Democrats and and 61% of Republicans also answered in the negative.
Individually, Americans claim to be more accepting: roughly 50% said they would vote for a gay or lesbian candidate, while around 30% said they would not.
